A fitness app with enough content and mechanics
to actually compete with category leaders

A fitness app with three workouts and a streak counter will not hold anyone past week two. We have built one to 718 exercises, 1,557 recipes and 132 achievements. We know the content depth and the backend discipline it actually takes to keep a user opening the app after the novelty wears off.

Who this is for

A fitness and habits app tracks workouts, nutrition or daily habits, and uses streaks, levels and achievements to keep someone opening it past the first motivated week. It fits three kinds of teams. A supplement or fitness brand that wants users inside its own ecosystem instead of a generic tracker. A coach or studio productizing a program. A wellness product betting on habit formation as the retention mechanic.

It is a genuinely content-heavy build. The app’s real competition is category leaders with years of exercise and recipe libraries. A thin content base loses to them no matter how polished the UI is. We say this upfront, so the content scope gets budgeted honestly.

What’s in the build

The core is workout and nutrition content: exercises, recipes, programs, structured so it can grow without a rebuild. That pairs with habit and streak tracking that drives XP, levels and achievements. Where it fits the brand, we add an AI coach on Claude or GPT for form notes, plan adjustments, or food logging from a photo. Gamification mechanics like a workout “boss fight” against your own past record round it out, a mechanic we have shipped and tuned in production.

An admin panel lets your team manage content, users and achievements without filing a developer ticket for every recipe added. Analytics tracks what actually predicts retention, habit completion and streak length, not just install counts. That is the number that tells you whether the loop is working.

We also build in the detail a content-heavy app needs to stay reliable as it grows. Versioned content means a new exercise or recipe batch gets reviewed before it goes live, instead of appearing untested in front of real users. Localization is structured from the start, so adding a language does not mean touching code. A data export path lets your team analyze engagement patterns outside the admin panel when a deeper question comes up than the built-in dashboard answers. Push notification timing is tuned to each user’s own activity pattern, rather than one blast hour for the whole user base. That is part of what keeps a habit loop from feeling generic.

How we build it

  1. Scope the content honestly. How many exercises, recipes or habit types you can realistically maintain, since content debt kills these apps quietly.
  2. Build the habit loop first. Streaks, XP and achievements are the retention mechanic, so they get built and tuned before cosmetic polish.
  3. Add AI features where they earn their cost. A coach or food-photo scanning only if it serves the core loop, not as a feature-list checkbox.
  4. Test from week one. Gamification logic breaks silently if untested. Our test suites grow alongside features specifically to catch that.
  5. Launch with retention analytics. Habit completion and streak data from day one, so the next content investment is based on evidence.

Timeline and price

Tier Price What’s included Timeline
MVP from $7,000 Workout or habit tracking, streaks, one content library, basic gamification 8 to 14 weeks
Production from $13,500 MVP plus AI coach or photo logging, achievements, admin content panel 14 to 20 weeks
Full control, handover-ready from $14,500 Everything in Production plus full handover documentation and test-suite ownership for your team 14 to 20 weeks

What you own at the end

The content library sits in your own database, editable without us. The app runs under your own developer accounts. The backend and test suite are documented well enough that your own developers can extend it without breaking what already works. If an AI coach is in scope, the prompts and logic are documented, not a black box only we can touch.

See the AI agents service page for how we scope AI features like a coach. See the education and courses app and loyalty and rewards app pages for adjacent builds. FAQ

How much does a fitness or habit app cost?

From $7,000 for workout or habit tracking with gamification and one content library size. An AI coach, food-photo logging, or a workout RPG layer typically adds $4,000 to $8,000. We scope the exact content volume with you first.

How long does it take?

8 to 14 weeks depending mostly on content volume and whether an AI coach is in scope. A habit-tracking app with no AI feature ships faster than one with food-photo scanning and coaching.

What stack do you use, and does the AI coach cost extra to run?

React Native and Expo, FastAPI backend, PostgreSQL. Claude or GPT powers the AI coach when it is in scope. That runs as a cost separate from the build, usually $0.02 to $0.10 per coaching interaction depending on model and length.

Who owns the content library and the app?

You. Exercises, recipes, programs and achievements live in your own database, editable through the admin panel without a developer. The app ships under your own store accounts.

How do you keep a backend this complex from breaking on every update?

Automated tests from the first week, not added later. Our largest fitness build grew its test suite from 87 to 1,077 tests as features shipped. That way, new work does not quietly break gamification or content logic that already worked.
